Newmarket Real Tennis Court
The court of the Newmarket Real Tennis
Club is one of three that have been built in or near
Newmarket. When King James I built his palace in the High
Street in 1610 he included a Real Tennis court and both he
and Charles I played on it frequently.
It fell into disrepair after Charles' execution and was
hardly used after this. Col. Harry McCalmont built a court
in 1902 on his Cheveley Park Estate but he died shortly
afterwards and the court, which was demolished in 1924, was
never used.
